„THE MOTHER” BY ŁUKASZ OSTALSKI AWARDED IN TAMPERE

The 43rd edition of Finnish Tampere Short Film Festival reached its end on Sunday evening. Among this year’s winners was a Polish film – “The Mother” by Łukasz Ostalski.

From more than 4500 films submitted to this year’s edition of the Tampere Film Festival the selection board had chosen 65 titles that made up the competition lineup. There were four Polish films among them – apart from the awarded “The Mother” by Łukasz Ostalski, also animated “What happens when children don’t eat soup” by Paweł Prewencki, documentary “The camp” by Tomasz Jeziorski and fiction “Our bad winter” by Grzegorz Zariczny. On the last festival’s evening the jury announced the winners. Grand Prix of the festival went to “The Mass of Men” directed by Gabriel Gauchet while Polish “The Mother” was awarded an Audience Award.

The diploma film by Łukasz Ostalski – a graduate of Gdynia Film School is a story of a difficult family relationship. Małgorzata - an important politician - is going to her home at the lake. Her son - a drug addict - needs her help. Małgorzata is asking her daughter for her support. At home they find Małgorzata’s semiconscious son and a massacred body of a young girl. In the face of the tragedy, their relationship gets complicated, disclosing their hidden grudges. The mother has to make the most difficult decision in her life.

Tampere Film Festival along with the festivals in Oberhausen and Clermont-Ferrand is one of the most important short film festivals in Europe and it is organized annually from 1969.

This year’s edition of Tampere was held between 6th and 10th March.
