ANIMATED FILM FESTIVALS IN MAY

This month, Polish animated films will be shown at eleven film festivals. You can watch Polish films, among others, at the festivals in Mexico, Bulgaria and in Chile.

The month was opened by the festival Golden Kuker, held for the sixth time in Bulgaria. In the international short film competition, there were "Hippos" by Piotr Dumała and "A Documentary Film" by Marcin Podolec, debuting abroad. The programme of the Bulgarian animated film festival included short- and feature-length films, television series, films for children as well as music videos. This year's edition of the festival ended on May 10.

Within the frames of the 6th edition of the BCN Sport Film festival, one could watch "Baths" by Tomek Ducki. The festival, accredited by the international Olympic committee, belongs to the FICTS network, uniting sports film festivals, and is the most important festival of this type in Spain. The festival ended on May 9. Polish films were also present in the competition of the Chilemonos festival in Chile. This year, "Hippos" by Piotr Dumała competed for the festival laurels. Simultaneously with the Chilean festival Chilemonos - from 5 to 10 May - the 6th edition of the Czech festival Anifilm was held. In the short film competition, two Polish films were shown: "Fugue For Cello, Trumpet and Landscape" by Jerzy Kucia and "A Blue Room" by Tomasz Siwiński. As every year, the festival was held in Trebon, and it was accompanied by another edition of Visegrad Animation Forum - a forum addressed to producers and animated film-makers from the Visegrad countries.

The most frequently shown film this month is "Fugue For Cello, Trumpet and Landscape" by Jerzy Kucia. In May, the film was invited to participate in the competitions at the festivals Anifilm, Stuttgart IAFF and Vis Vienna. The latest film by Kucia enjoys great popularity at the festivals. Since its international première at the Japanese festival in Hiroshima last August, the film has been shown at 13 prestigious festivals and won six awards and special mentions.

It brings a lot of joy that Polish films will participate in the animated film festival in Stuttgart.  This year, "An Incredibly Elastic Man" by Karolina Specht and the aforementioned "Fugue For Cello, Trumpet and Landscape" by Jerzy Kucia will meet in the competition. The festival is an important spot on the map of European events dedicated to animated films, and the simultaneously held FMX market every year attracts a mass of producers, film-makers and buyers to Stuttgart.

A numerous representation of Polish film will be found in the programme of the American Northwest Animation Film Festival. This year, there are 5 Polish films in the festival competition, among others,  "Lost Senses" by Marcin Wasilewski and "This World" by Zbigniew Czapla. Polish films are guests at the American festival every year.

Two films by Jerzy Kucia will participate in this year's edition of the Vis Vienna festival in Austria. "Tuning the Instruments" will be shown within the frames of associated section, and the latest "Fugue For Cello, Trumpet and Landscape" - in the short film competition. In addition to the film by Kucia, "Hippos" by Piotr Dumała and "A Blue Room" by Tomasz Siwiński are included in the animated film competition section. In this year's festival competition, 59 feature, documentary and animated films will be shown.

At the end of the month starts the 19th edition of Korean SICAF. The festival is one of the most important animated film festivals in the world, and every year it is accompanied by the trade fair Seoul Promotion Plan. This year, two Polish short films qualified for the international competition: "Summer 2014" by Wojciech Sobczyk and "A Documentary Film" by Marcin Podolec. This year, several dozen films produced around the world will compete for the awards in the short film competition. The festival ends on May 28.

At the end of the month, another edition of the Mexican festival Animasivo is held. In the festival competition, one can watch "under_construction" by Marcin Wojciechowski and "Ziegenort" by Tomasz Popakul. It is the festival at which Polish films often won awards.  Last year, the jury awarded "The Baths" by Tomek Ducki.

The last festival in May is the Korean International Women's Film Festival in Seoul, this year held for the 17th time. In the competition, "Darling" by Izabela Plucińska will be shown. This is another competition screening in Korea of the film by Plucińska - last year, her animated film participated in the competition at the SICAF festival.
