TWO POLISH ANIMATED FILMS AWARDED AT THE STOPTRIK
"Portrait of Suzanne" by Izabela Plucińska and "Marbles" by Natalia Spychała won the special mentions from the jury at the 9th edition of the Slovenian festival StopTrik.
Stoptrik is an international stop motion animated film festival, which was born in the squat alternative culture centre in Maribor in 2011. Since 2012, the festival formula was extended to include two-stage, professional stop motion animation workshops and the international short animated film competition.
As many as three Polish animated films were invited to the competition this year: the award-winning "Marbles" by Natalia Spychała and "Portrait of Suzanne" by Izabela Plucińska as well as "The Little Soul" by Barbara Rupik.
The film by Spychała, appreciated by Waltraud Grausgruber, is an animation made using the stop-motion technique with thread on the vaseline and glass. Its protagonist is a figure, parts of the body appearing as fragments, which are inseparably connected with space and with various kinds of objects. The mutual interaction of all these parts creates a system of dependencies, a closed series of interrelated events.
In turn, the animated film by Plucińska captivated the juror Nancy Denney-Phelps. The film is set in a small hotel, where is a man who tries to prevent his hunger for love by eating too much. However, plates full of cooked meats, vegetables and fruit cannot soothe the longing for his beloved Suzanne. When the protagonist goes to the city in search of food, he accidentally injures his left foot which unexpectedly turns into Suzanne. From then on, they can be inseparable... This is, however, only the beginning of a surreal story about loneliness, jealousy and love. A grotesque adaptation of the short story by Roland Topor, created with plasticine, in which every detail delights.
This year's edition of the festival was held from the 3rd to the 6th of October.
