"SOLIDARITY SHORTS" THE INTERNATIONAL FILM CONTEST
The first edition of the International Film Contest 'Solidarity Shorts' has begun! The event is aimed at amateur filmmakers worldwide who cherish the ideal of solidarity. The task for the competitors is to make a film study whereby they answer to the question: 'What does the idea of solidarity mean to me today?'. Films may be submitted till September 15.
The 'Solidarity Shorts' competition is organized by the Lech Walesa Institute in cooperation with the Gdynia Film School and Wajda School Foundation. Its purpose is to encourage young people to reflect upon the contemporary world as well as relationships between different people or different cultures. The contest creates an opportunity for young people to express their own understanding of the word 'solidarity', and learn about the historical importance of 'Solidarity' at the same time.The contest admits filmmakers between 18 and 30 years of age and films of not less than one and not more than three minutes in length. Authors are not restricted to any specific genre, their film might be a drama, an animation, a comedy or even a musical. They are also free to choose a filming technique. Films may be shot with cell phones, digital cameras of film cameras.
Applications, that is, films submitted through the contest's website, will be accepted until September 15. Following the submission of the first film, a gallery will be held online at www.solidarityshorts.org where the participating films will be available for watching. Ten winning films will be selected by the contest's jury, made up by outstanding lecturers and filmmakers of the Gdynia Film School and Wajda School Foundation. One film will additionally be selected by internet users, who will be able to vote between September 16 and 22.
Prizes have been secured for the authors of the eleven winning films: airplane tickets plus covering of the costs of visit in Poland, entry to professional workshops held at the Gdynia Film School as well as entry to the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates which will be held on October 21-23 in Warsaw this year.
The contest is a unique opportunity to promote Poland and it also helps educating global audience. Polish institutions that jointly support the event include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Polish Film Institute and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The 'Solidarity Shorts' contest is a fringe event to coincide with the official programme for the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.
