"MOOMINS AND THE WINTER WONDERLAND" AND "LOVING VINCENT" WITH A CHANCE FOR AN OSCAR!

On November 9th 2017 the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the list of 26 animated features from all over the world that have been submitted to consideration for an Oscar nomination. Among them there are two Polish productions.

Two Polish animation features: "Moomins and the Winter Wonderland" by Jakub Wroński and Ira Carpelan and "Loving Vincent" directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, have a chance to get an Oscar nomination.

"Moomins and the Winter Wonderland" is a story about special time in Moominvalley. The film's protagonist is Moomintroll, who this winter decides not to hibernate as all the generations of Moomins used to do. He wants to know how the world looks like when his whole family is asleep. This winter he will discover what snow and frost are really like and learn a lot about the wintery Moominvalley. And with the utmost impatience he will await the mysterious guest – Christmas – who will soon visit the Moominhouse.

The screenplay written by Małgorzata Więckowicz-Żyła, Piotr Szczepanowicz and Ira Carpelan is based on Tove Jansson’s novels. Film is based on the footage from the series and a puppet film produced by Film Polski and Jupiter Film in the ‘80s.

Producers of "Moomins and the Winter Wonderland" are Grzegorz Waclawek, Piotr Szczepanowicz and Zofia Jaroszuk from Animoon, and from the Finnish side Ira Carpelan and Tom Carpelan from Filmkompaniet. The film was made with the support of the Polish Film Institute and the Finnish Film Foundation.

"Loving Vincent" is the world's first feature-length fully painted animation, made by Polish director and painter Dorota Kobiela and producer Hugh Welchman.

"Loving Vincent" tells the story of life and death of one of the most remarkable painters ever – Vincent van Gogh – using 56 thousand hand-painted frames. The film was constructed as an investigation concerning the artist's death. It brings to life over 100 van Gogh's paintings.

The film has been sold to over 130 countries in the world. It will be shown in: France, China, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Portugal, Japan, Thailand, Columbia, India, Russia, Brazil and many others.

 "Loving Vincent" is nominated to the European Film Award 2017 in the European Animated Feature Film category.
